We’re almost to September. When the MLB season gets to September, that means that we’re in the homestretch of the season. Teams are fighting hard to stay in the race for one of the five playoff spots in each league. Let’s preview some of the top MLB Betting games of the week and look at how they could affect the playoff races.
Top MLB Betting Picks of the Week – August 26th Edition
Tuesday, August 27th Tampa Bay Rays @ Houston AstrosThe Houston Astros just keep on winning. They currently hold a 9.5 game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the American League West. Houston is also tied with the New York Yankees for the best record in the American League. The Astros love to play at home, as they hold an astounding 49-16 record at Minute Maid Park.
The Rays are the surprise team in the American League. They don’t have much star power, but they have put things together, and are currently sitting in the second wild card spot in the American League. Even though Houston is a hard place to win, the Rays are 42-25 on the road this season.
This will be a great pitching matchup, as the team’s two aces collide. Houston will send Justin Verlander to the mound, and Tampa Bay will counter with Charlie Morton. Both pitchers are coming off of great starts. We should see a lot of strikeouts in this one.
Wednesday, August 28th – Chicago Cubs @ New York MetsThe New York Mets were one of the hottest teams in baseball coming off of the All Star break. They have since cooled down, but they’re still in playoff contention. While sitting in fourth place in the National League East, they’re still only two games out of a Wild Card spot.
The Mets will welcome the Chicago Cubs to Citi Field. The Cubs, who were swept at home by the Nationals over the weekend, have struggled on the road this season. With a 25-39 road record to start the week, the Cubs haven’t had much luck away from Wrigley Field.
The Cubs are currently sitting in a Wild Card spot. They will send Kyle Hendricks to the mound. Hendricks has been good over his last two starts, having only given up one run over his last 14 innings. Unfortunately for him, this game isn’t at Wrigley, as he has a 4.76 ERA on the road, compared to a 1.79 ERA at home.
Hendricks will be opposed by Noah Syndergaard. Syndergaard has been on a roll since the All-Star break. He has struck out 55 batters in his last 54 innings pitched. He and the other starters have been a big reason that the Mets have gotten back into the playoff race.
Friday, August 30th – New York Mets @ Philadelphia PhilliesEven though these two teams are sitting in 3rd and 4th place in the National League East, they’re each still within two games of a playoff berth. This will be a huge series for both teams. Whichever team claims the series, will get a leg up on the other for a shot at the playoffs.
Philadelphia will send their ace, Aaron Nola, to the mound against Zack Wheeler of the Mets. Wheeler has struggled in his last three starts, so that should give an advantage to the Phillies. With the Phillies bats waking up, Wheeler could be in for a long night.
