Which Big Names will be on the Move?
Once the Washington Nationals declared that every player with the exception of Juan Soto was on the trade market, pennant-chasing teams were figuring out a way to try to acquire Max Scherzer. Scherzer is the most sought-after pitcher on the trade market, and numerous contenders have contacted the Nationals about acquiring the former Cy Young award winner.
The San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, and San Francisco Giants are the teams that have shown the most interest in Scherzer. Don’t be surprised if the Los Angeles Dodgers make a late run at Scherzer as well.
The Chicago Cubs are in selling mode, and they have two players that are in very high demand. Kris Bryant will be a free agent at the end of the season, and he has been a hot commodity. The Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets, and others have been putting together offers for the versatile Bryant.
Craig Kimbrel could be the best closer in the game this season, and he’s available as well. `The Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, and Boston Red Sox are the top teams rumored to be looking to acquire Kimbrel.
Jose Berrios of the Minnesota Twins is another top-tier starter that could be dealt with. The Twins have already traded Nelson Cruz, and it’s been rumored that they’ve been shopping Byron Buxton and Josh Donaldson as well. Berrios has been targeted by numerous teams.
Joey Gallo of the Rangers, Trevor Story of the Rockies, and Trea Turner of the Nationals are some of the other top players that teams are trying to acquire before Friday’s deadline.
COVID Strikes Again
Speaking of Trea Turner, he was pulled from Tuesday night’s game against the Phillies. It was announced shortly thereafter that Turner had tested positive for COVID. There is no set amount of time that a player has to miss when placed on the COVID list, but most stays are at least ten days.
This could deter some teams from trying to acquire Turner, but many will still try to pry him away from Washington. It will take a very good offer to get the Nationals to let go of one of their top players, as they have said that they are not in rebuild mode.
