With the playoff races heating up in Major League Baseball, this week has some potential playoff matchups. Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting MLB Betting matchups for this week’s slate of games.

Top MLB Betting Picks of the Week – July 22nd Edition

Monday, July 22 – Oakland Athletics @ Houston Astros

What many thought was a foregone conclusion in the Houston Astros winning the American League West, has now raised some questions. The Oakland Athletics are coming for the Astros! At the start of the week, the Astros hold a 5.5 game lead over Oakland. With these two teams facing off for a three-game series this week, we are going to see if Houston is going to step up, or if the A’s are going to prove that they are for real. Entering the week, the A’s were 8-2 in their last 10 games. They’ll throw newly acquired Homer Bailey against Gerrit Cole. In his first start with Oakland last week, Bailey threw six quality innings, striking out seven, and earning the win. Over his last six starts, he has four wins, with an ERA under 3. Cole has been stellar this season. With a 10-5 record, with a 3.12 ERA, and 194 strikeouts, Cole earned another All-Star game appearance. Cole and Justin Verlander have had to carry the Astros pitching staff as of late. The Astros will be looking for a big start from Cole to try to stymie the momentum of the A’s.

Monday, July 22 – New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins and the Oakland A’s have been the two biggest surprise teams in the American League. The Twins currently lead the major leagues in home runs hit and runs scored. They’ll need to score plenty of runs if they want to defeat the New York Yankees. This is a potential playoff matchup, as the leaders of the American League Central take on the team with the best record in the American League. Martin Perez will take the hill for the Twins. He has struggled over his last few starts, so this could be bad news for the Twins, as the Yankees have a stacked lineup. The Yankees, who enter the game on a five-game winning streak, will counter with CC Sabathia. Much like Perez, Sabathia has struggled over his last few starts. He has been helped by good run support. This will be a huge series for the Twins, as the Cleveland Indians have been streaking as of late, and have come to within three games of the Twins. If the Twins want to put some distance between themselves and Cleveland, they need to win this series.

Friday, July 26 – Los Angeles Dodgers @ Washington Nationals

Once left for dead, the Washington Nationals are now in the first wild card spot in the National League playoff race and have climbed to within 5.5 games of the Atlanta Braves. Led by their stellar starting pitching, the Nationals have been on a tear. The Nationals will welcome the team with the best record in the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers. And the Dodgers will have National League All-Star game starter Hyun-Jin Ryu on the mound. Ryu enters the week with an 11-2 record with a 1.76 ERA. Austin Voth is scheduled to pitch for the Nationals. However, he was scratched from his Sunday start due to shoulder soreness, so we could see someone else on the hill. Regardless, they won’t be seeing Stephen Strasburg or Patrick Corbin who both will have pitched earlier in the week. This series will be a litmus test for how good the Nationals are. The wild card race is very highly contested right now in the National League, so the Nationals need to stay hot. This should be a fun series.
