Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation has craved the return of the big three professional sports. Well, this Thursday, one of the big three makes it’s return, as the Major League Baseball season will return with the World Champion Washington Nationals hosting the New York Yankees. Let’s take a closer look at how these teams arrive to this showdown so you can make your bets against their MLB odds.
MLB Yankees vs. Nationals Betting Preview
With the season kicking off with two high profile teams, the betting world is looking at this as a huge event. This game could take on some of the highest amounts of betting action in sports history. With the moneyline showing the Yankees at -141, and the Nationals at +123, and the over/under at 7 ½ runs, there should be plenty of action.
The season will kick off with a phenomenal pitching matchup. The Yankees huge free agent signee, Gerritt Cole, will face off against the Nationals ace, Max Scherzer. Cole is coming off of a stellar 2019 season, going 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA. In his 212 innings pitched, Cole struck out 326 batters. Cole has always traveled well, as he has gone 24-13 on the road over the last three seasons.
Scherzer battled some injuries last season, and didn’t put up his usual numbers. He finished the 2019 campaign with an 11-7 record with a 2.92 ERA. He stepped it up in the postseason, as in his six appearances, he went 3-0 with a 2.40 ERA.
The Yankees will boast arguably the best lineup in baseball. Led by Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Gleyber Torres, Gary Sanchez, and DJ LeMahieu, the Yankees will put a ton of runs on the board. With Stanton and Judge coming off of an injury-plagued 2019, and both now seemingly healthy, the New York lineup will be a challenge for anyone they face.
The Yankees lineup was the best road-hitting lineup in the Major Leagues last season. They hit .271 while scoring 503 runs away from the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. Their run-scoring ability on the road helped lead them to their league-leading 103 victories last season.
As for the Nationals offense, they have taken some major hits this offseason. With the loss of free agent Anthony Rendon to the Angels, and Ryan Zimmerman opting not to play this season, Washington has some holes to fill. The team did sign Starlin Castro and Eric Thames to help bolster their offensive production.
Even with the loss of Rendon, the Nationals will still put a potent lineup on the field. Led by young slugger Juan Soto, along with Trea Turner, Victor Robles, and Adam Eaton, the Nationals should still be able to put some runs on the board.
With the baseball fans of the world eagerly awaiting Thursday night’s Major League Baseball Opening night, we’re hoping to see a great game. Both of these teams have postseason aspirations, and both will be looking to put on a show for what will likely be a massive television audience. We should see a great pitching battle between two of the top starters in baseball. If Scherzer can hold down the Yankees lineup, the Nationals should have a chance. If we see the Gerritt Cole of 2019, the Nationals will have a tough time putting runs on the board. We can’t wait for this one!
