The Fighters

Curtis “Razor” Blaydes (13-2-0)

Blaydes is nearly at the top of the heavyweights, currently ranking third best in the heavyweight division. His fighting record has been impressive and shows us that he has composed 10 wins by knockout and 3 by decision.

He has some solid numbers here, with a striking accuracy at 51 percent and a grappling accuracy at 56 percent. He delivers 3.74 significant strikes a minute while taking on 1.86. This tells us that he nearly delivers twice as many significant strikes as he takes on.

Blaydes has a moderate significant strike defense at 57 percent but has quite a poor takedown defense at 25 percent. He also shows aggression in the ground game offensively, as he averages 6.63 takedowns per 15 minutes.

Alexander “Drago” Volkov (31-7-0)

Volkov is steadily working back up the rankings, as he is currently ranked 7th in the heavyweight division. He has a stacked resume, loaded with 20 wins by knockout, 3 by submission, and 8 by decision.

He has some very good numbers here, with a striking accuracy at 60 percent and a grappling accuracy at 75 percent. He delivers an impressive 6.19 significant strikes a minute and takes on 3.30. This shows us again another example of a great significant strike ratio and his aggressive approach at hits.

Volkov has a fairly high takedown defense at 76 percent and a very solid significant strike defense at 58 percent. He also averages roughly 1 takedown per 15 minutes.

Who Wins The Main Event

Both of these fighters will definitely have their hands full when it comes time to fighting each other. They both have similar resumes and show that they can deliver some incredible knockouts.

The odds listed above, as well as the market in general, heavily favor Blaydes. As the two match up great on paper, can we see this as a sure bet though?

Blaydes is vulnerable to takedowns since he has such a low defense at 25 percent. However, the man also enjoys taking his opponents down to the ground with a heavy 6.63 takedowns generally every fight, so I think the takedown defense could be overlooked here.

Volkov has a better significant strike ratio here, but only by a little. His numbers are better, but still strikes about the same on average. I look for him to use his ground game later on if he is unable to shake Blaydes on standup.

Overall, I think agreeing with the odds is the best bet. Blaydes has been a force to be reckoned with since he stepped foot in the octagon. Make no mistake, he better take of Volkov early because he is an excellent knockout artist.
