Olympic Basketball – Women’s & Men’s Quarterfinals Analysis

What to Expect on the Women’s Side

The women’s bracket is set, with the quarterfinal games all being played on Tuesday. There are going to be more games over the next two days on the women’s end with those results leading to the projected matchups for the next round.

With all of the WNBA All-Stars and all-world players rocking for Team USA, they should be able to claim the gold. The competition will be stiff of course, but by the time the championship rolls around, they will be the clear favorites. After all, who can truly stand up to them and knock them off their perch?

The answer would be nobody.

Projecting the Men’s Winner

With eight teams left in the men’s bracket, it’s going to get interesting. The best game of the entire tournament could take place in the semifinals if the top two can advance. It would be Australia versus the USA, which are each competing for gold. The head-to-head would be awfully exciting.

The Boomers have Patty Mills, who turns into a full-blown superstar during Olympic play. And though they did lose Aron Baynes, guys like Jock Landale can come in and help them out. It’s too bad Thon Maker isn’t there, as he’d help them tremendously there. So many scorers are on the roster, and Matisse Thybulle plays big minutes off the pine.

Slovenia never loses when Luka is on the court, so if they can knock off Germany, they would be but two wins from the gold medal. There isn’t anyone else in the realm of NBA experience on the roster, but he’s truly good enough to offset everything else.

And the winner of France vs Italy will have a good shot at making the finals too. Both of them have some great NBA experience, but it might be all about Rudy Gobert inside. And the guard battle of Nando De Colo and Nico Mannion will be a blast.

Germany, Argentina, and Spain may all have a tough time making it to the semifinals. But if any of them can pull a win out, then perhaps anything would go in the semis. Spain playing against the USA is interesting as a quarterfinal showdown, given how many great battles they have had over the years in the Olympics.

Australia is going to be disappointed if they lose before the final. This is a team that has slowly been ascending the ranks, and if they can do enough to support their cause, the gold can be theirs. They are the second-best team after the USA.
