Italy vs Ecuador Odds & Pick for U-20 World Cup Third Place Game

Written by on June 14, 2019

After both suffered disappointing losses in the semi-finals, Italy and Ecuador will meet Friday in the Third Place Game of the U-20 World Cup. The betting odds for this game are as tight as they get, with Italy a slight favorite at +152 while Ecuador is listed at +165. Italy fell 1-0 to Ukraine in the semi-finals. It was the first loss of the tournament for the young Azzurri. Until then Italy had four wins and one draw to reach the semi-finals. If they can rebound quickly and get a win on Friday, Italy’s U-20 team will finish third for a second consecutive World Cup. Ecuador, meanwhile, also suffered a 1-0 loss in the semi-finals, getting upset by South Korea. The South American side has already advanced further than they have in any previous U-20 World Cup, but finishing third would be a nice way to cap off the tournament. This is also a revenge game for Ecuador after losing to Italy during the group stage. Let’s take a look at the latest Odds.

Italy vs Ecuador Odds & Pick for U-20 World Cup Third Place Game

On the Attack

Ecuador started the tournament slowly from an attacking perspective, managing just two goals in their three group games. However, they seemed to break out of that slump by putting three goals past Uruguay and two more past the U.S. to reach the semi-finals. However, they have stifled once again in the semi-finals, as the crossbar and a strong performance from South Korean keeper Lee Gwang-Yeon kept them off the scoreboard. Nevertheless, the South Americans will be looking to get on the attack against Italy. The pressure is slightly off with this being a Third Place Game, meaning Ecuador can push forward with slightly less concern about defending. There’s also no doubt they have the speed and technical ability to potentially open up a stubborn Italian defense. Of course, such a strategy could play right into the hands of the Italians, who will be fine defending for long stretches and then trying to hit Ecuador on the counterattack.

Something to Prove?

Despite beating Ecuador during the group stage, the Italians may enter this game with something to prove. Ecuador dominated large stretches of that meeting a few weeks ago, controlling 65% of the possession while playing a man down for the entire 2nd half. Italy had just one shot on target in that game, but Andrea Pinamonti made it count. The Italians definitely played with fire in that game. They conceded 13 corner kicks while only earning one and got a penalty save from Alessandro Plizzari. That being said, having seen Ecuador up close could work to Italy’s advantage. They will know first-hand the ability and athleticism that Ecuador brings to the table and may be able to make adjustments to better handle it.

Who’s Playing?

Consolation games at major tournaments are always difficult from a betting perspective. Both teams are likely to make significant lineup changes, so players who’ve not seen much of the field will likely get their chance. However, Ecuador is likely to want it more, and that could be the difference. Bet on Ecuador to win the Third Place Game of the U-20 World Cup.
