2021 ATP Madrid Open Betting Preview
Christian Garin Vs Fernado Verdasco
- When: Monday, May 3 – 11:00 CEST
World no.22 Christian Garin will clash with world no.71 Fernando Verdasco on Monday, May 3, in the first round of the 2021 Madrid Open. The pair have met before in a hard-court event, albeit in Chengdu, China, in 2019, when Garin won in three sets.
Although it’s unclear whether the Chilean player will manage to recreate that performance on Monday, it’s fair to say that he’s the favorite to do so. He is your typical South American clay specialist, having won five ATP titles on clay in his career.
His most recent clay title came on home soil, in Santiago, Chile, in March, when he beat Facundo Bagnis (6-4, 6-7, 7-5) to win the 2021 Chile Open. Garin then went on to reach the third round in Monte Carlo, where he lost to the eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Earlier last week, Garin attended the Barcelona Open, where he crashed out in the first round. Last week Garin also attended the Estoril Open, where he suffered a shock defeat at the hand of Cameron Norrie.
His next opponent, Fernando Verdasco, enters Madrid Open as a wildcard. As a former top-10 player, Verdasco hasn’t been too active in 2021, having attended only two events – Miami and Estoril.
What’s more, Verdasco hasn’t been performing too well of late – largely due to fitness problems. The Spaniard has been dealing with a muscle injury, and after finally getting rid of it, he caught COVID-19 twice.
Verdasco has had a rich and successful career – reaching the semi-finals of the French Open four years ago and has made it to the quarter-finals in Madrid twice before. However, Verdasco is no longer playing at the same level as back then.
Prediction: Christian Garin to win in straight sets
Dominik Koepfer Vs Reilly Opelka
- When: Monday, May 3 – 11:00 CEST
World no.55 Dominik Koepfer will clash with world no. 45 Reilly Opelka on Monday, May 3, in the first round of the 2021 Madrid Open. It will mark their first meeting since August 2019, when Koepfer won 3-0, securing his first head-to-head victory after losing the previous three.
Koepfer has been fairly active in 2021 and was also relatively successful. His best result came in Acapulco, where he made it to the semi-finals, beating Milos Raonic but eventually losing to Alexander Zverev.
On clay, however, the German was not nearly as impressive. He successfully qualified in Monte Carlo, only to lose to Marco Cecchinato.
He followed that up with another first-round defeat in Barcelona, where he lost to Corentin Moutet. Koepfer improved a bit in Munich, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber, only to lose to Jan-Lennard Struff in the next round.
The Madrid Open will mark Opelka’s first clay event of 2021 and his first tournament on European soil. What’s more, his form – since reaching the second round of the Australian Open – hasn’t been good.
Opelka hasn’t played a single official match since the Miami Open and is 0-5 in his last five fixtures. It’s also important to note that clay is not his preferred surface and hasn’t been for a while.
Since 2016 when he went 10/6 on clay, Opelka has managed a positive win % only in 2018 (12/5) but has failed to win more than 50% clay fixtures in 2017 (5/5), 2019 (5/7), and 2020 (1/4).
Even though Koepfer is not in the best form, he should be favorited to defeat Opelka, who is making his 2021 clay debut on Monday. The German came out ahead the last time these two met, and we expect the history to repeat itself here.
Prediction: Dominik Koepfer to win
