The 2023 Wimbledon tournament is coming to a close, with the finals being played this weekend in London. The men’s semifinals are underway Friday morning, with No. 2 Novak Djokovic in control early against No. 8 Janik Sinner. The second semifinal features No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz against No. 3 Daniil Medvedev. 

On Saturday, Wimbledon will crown a first-time champion on the women’s side as No. 6 Ons Jabeur against unseeded Marketa Vondrousova.

Second Women’s Semifinal Goes the Distance

On Thursday, the women’s semifinals took place, and the second match went the distance. Jabeur prevailed over Australian Open champion and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka. After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Jabeur grabbed a late break in the second set to win 6-4. She was in control the entire third set and held off Sabalenka 6-3 to reach the final for a second straight season. 

Jabeur lost in the final in 2022 after winning the first set against Elana Rybakina. She also fell in the US Open final last year so this will be her third final in the last 13 months, and she looks for his first grand slam title. 

Vondrousova Beats Svitolina

In the first semifinal on Thursday, Vondrousova knocked off wild card Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-3. She will be playing in her second final after falling in the 2019 French Open championship. Both Vondoursova and Svitolina had taken time away from the tour, for different reasons, so both were unseeded for Wimbledon. 

Vondrousova already knocked off No. 4 Jess Pegula in the quarters before taking down Svitolina. She was slightly favored in the semifinal matchup, so while it may have been an upset in the minds of cheering fans, it was as expected by the oddsmakers. 

Next Matches to Bet

Djokovic won the first set and is leading the second, so that match looks to be in the books. The second semifinal has Alcaraz -265 against Medvedev at +202. The total games is 40.5 with the over at -110 and the under at -119. 

As for the women’s final on Saturday, Jabeur has opened as the favorite. She is -214 at MyBookie to break through and win her first grand slam. A native of Tunisia, she would be both the first Arab woman and the first woman from Africa to win a Grand Slam title.

Vondrousova is +184 to win her first grand slam and join Petra Kvitova as recent Wimbledon champions from the Czech Republic. 

They are 3-3 against each other all-time, with Vondrousova winning the last two matches. She beat Jabeur in straight sets at Indian Wells in March and also upset the Tunisian in the second round of the Australian Open in three sets. Jabeur won matchups in 2021 and 2022 while the two split challenger matches nearly a decade ago.
